RIGHT! Said Fred!

Fred Latremouille~ (Supplement to ‘My Special Music People’)

Aka the Legendary Chief Raunchy Wolf (a Radio tag) and who like most people my age I had my first contact with Fred over the airwaves when he was on Vancouver’s Top 40/50 Powerhouse CFUN prior to the arrival of CKLG.

This would be the latter 1960’s I’m thinking.

I later followed his brief disconnect from Radio with his opening of what local newspapers were calling a Hippie Emporium on Granville street by Theatre Row, he later returned to Radio with far less fanfare. The newspapers were on anything ‘Hippie’ like a wet shirt in those days.

My 1st personal connection with Fred was, as I was one of the crew that booked dance bands for weekend dances at Sunset Community Center in South Vancouver, we had the CFUN Classics, soon to be Howie Vickers and the CFUN Classics, and as Fred had his Drum instrumental hit out ‘Latremotion’ he made a special appearance, performed it and impressed me further.

Years later on, we made Professional contact as I made the rounds of Radio Stations especially when he was the Music Direction for CKVN, which actually had been CFUN but they’d sold the calls to an Eastern Radio outfit, and he was always a fair guy to deal with; Right! Said Fred.

In the approximate same time period, he had a show on Radio CBC, the name escapes me now but it ran on Saturday nights and I really dug it as it introduced Artists/Music I’d never heard before, it was a trip.

One Saturday night he turned me on to Taj Mahal; Wow! This Taj guy is something! It stuck with me, I went out and bought the records and a bit later when our Band was formed, we covered some of his stuff.

A few years later again, I was nearly speechless when I met him backstage at The Commodore as we had a current record of his at the time; Holy shit! He’s standing right in front of me!

Fred had lots of other people on his show and one other left an impression on me, his name is Michael Phillip Jagger…Mick.

I listened through a very intelligent and thoughtful interview and when he asked his Satanic Majesty about his thoughts on the situation surrounding North American Indians, Mick, rather than pontificate from on high declined to make a comment citing that he really didn’t have enough knowledge of the situation to make any remark at all.

For the uninitiated, Fred and his wife Cathy were the bastion of broadcasting hosting the Morning Show on 97Kiss/FM in Vancouver nearly forever, once they left the station has gone thru a myriad of formats, calls, personnel, even Fred’s brother Kelly, but the Glory Days have never been the same there.

Recently, Fred resurfaced on my FaceBook friends now that he’s situated somewhere in the mystic East Coast of Canada and I’m hoping, as he’s now three hours ahead of us if he give me a call and let me know the winning 649 numbers so I might dash out and buy them.

So, there you go, my friend Fred.
