My Special Music People: #25

A Brief Raycap of my Career in a Nuthouse, Nutshell.

A Short List of some of the SPECIAL people and projects I worked with during my 38 Odd (and they WERE ODD!) years in the Music Bidness..

Poco / Eagles~

I am reminded by the recent Eagles concert in Vancouver, that I once had an association with them, or one of them at least.

I was always a fan of their music, as I was of Joe Walsh in his James Gang days (Funk 49, Ashbury Park, and the Rockstended version of Howard Tate’s R&B hit ‘Stop!’)

I was deeply touched by ‘Last Resort’ from the Hotel California’ LP as the first time I heard that was right after I found out that my friend Brian had jumped off the Granville Street bridge onto Beach Ave and killed himself.

So young and SO troubled, we didn’t see that coming.

Sadly, exactly a month, to the day later, his wife did the SAME thing, same place.

I never fail to feel the emotion whenever I hear that song, even today.

I first heard Poco’s ‘Rose of Cimarron’ on (then) CKLG/Fm, and being impressed with the sound, Country without the Bumpkin.

My last encounter with them, and this is where the Eagles come in, was with them in 1989 when Poco’s RCA LP ‘Legacy’ came out and they were playing a showcase at one of our Conventions in Toronto, and I was thrilled to meet Randy Meisner, former Eagle, and Jim Messina in particular.

In particular Because Jim wrote in a similar NeoCountry/Rock style as the Eagles and in between the two focal points of exposure was Loggins & Messina (Jim) who had a hot little number called ‘Your Mama Don’t Dance…’ but it was the ‘B’ side that got me (me, the guy that actually listened to ‘B’ sides; I found Elton John’s ‘Skyline Pigeon’ flip of ‘Levon’ the same way, so maybe I’m a ‘B’ Hive?), it was called ‘Golden Ribbons’ and it stoned me, and it is to this day one of the VERY best AND VERY well written songs, ever. Something I didn’t hesitate to share with Jim, and HE was amazed anyone even heard it.

So, like Eagles ‘Last Resort’, I was Gobsmacked while watching a TV Police drama in its final/closing scene, a person looking at the names on the Vietnam War Memorial wall in Washington DC when I hear this song come up and I was just Holy SHIT!! THIS is ‘Golden Ribbons’!! You mean somebody else knows about this treasure????

The impact of the song in this part of the show was both poignant and overwhelming as I felt myself turning into a puddle and grabbing for a bale of tissues; they NAILED it. Whew……

(TV Tunes)~

…….and THAT was the moment that my internet TV Tunes website idea was born; Stillborn p’raps, as it never made it off the drawing board, past an enthusiastic PowerPoint presentation I created.

I knew that this idea wasn’t the Silver Bullet the Music Biz needed but I felt it would still generate MILLIONS for Music sales Old & New, as catalogue sales would get a kick in the pants by people trying to find ‘Golden Ribbons’ for example, to buy, as well as potentially being a significant breakout tool for a NEW Artist/Group, breaking them to consumers from Film/TV and THEN to Radio for more Love, the point being proven!

But, unfortunately, I didn’t/don’t have the technical expertise to develop this nor did I have the money to move this ahead, still don’t.

I know there are a few of these types of sites on the internet, or were, but possibly not as robust or driven or interactive as my concept, that may simply come down to Promotion/Public awareness.

I DID put this out there at my ‘Throwing Away’ Raytirement party, by mentioning it in my parting shot/shout-out. But if I was pitching, nobody was catching as the response to inviting people to call me about it had the result best described as a Jimmy Buffet song ‘If the phone doesn’t ring, it’s me’.

So, it’s hard to soar with The Eagles when you can’t get off the ground, and, by-the-way? ‘Poco’ is Spanish for ‘a little’ or ‘not very much’ and this, has been much ado about a little something.
